please help!!!! my monitor is blank when it should be showing the windows desktop

i tried to change the resolution on my monitor and when asked me to restart i accepted it. When restarted, it showed the windows xp home office screen, and then the windows desktop does not come on, but it sound like it is starting , but i don't see anything. I tried to start in safe mode and it gave me a list that said something like
drive(0) hdrive(0) intertition(10) /system 32/and something els
but every line said something diferent. How can i start the computer without erasing all the info i have saved in there?

What your getting sounds like "boot from" options. Some computers show
that screen when you use F8 at boot. If so, try F5 instead to get
options to boot into safe mode, Last Known Good, etc.
