ms install expert needed

i have a printer on my machine at home, running xp pro.

the driver isnt 'exactly' the right one for xp but it works & they dont make
the printer or newer driver.

i have tried installing/uninstalling & the same problem happens.

the printer announces itself as 'new equipment' found everytime i boot.

which is irksome, but...

recently i installed an application that seems to have problems with the
installer and i think it is because the system sees something new but could
be wrong on that.

anyhow, everytime i boot, this app wants to 'install' again. so i have to
push the cancel install a bunch of time to kill it.

is there some way to 'block' this autodetection that is going on that
continually wants to install the app even tho it has been. (a couple times)

is there some way to tell winxp to forget about telling me of this 'new'
printer which has been there for years.

thanks.

There must be some pertinent piece of information that the system needs,
about your printer, that is not there. It therefore thinks it is a new
printer each time you boot up. If Microsoft has not included the proper
driver for your printer it is because the printer company did not submit
them to Microsoft for inclusion in the operating system.

If the printer company does not have Windows XP drivers on their web site it
means that they have stopped supporting your printer. Try using drivers for
Windows 2000. Many times they work. If they do not work - new printers are
very inexpensive around the time of any major holiday (in the U.S.). It may
be time to look into a new one!

Try this.
Find the exact name and model number of your printer and
go to

driverguide.com

I would be surprised if you do not find a print driver for
your printer and your Operating System.Try to download
an .exe file it is much easier than a zip file.
This should remedy your prob.
You can go to Start/Run type this command msconfig and
enter, click on the Startup items and untick the
particular application that is in start up.This will
remove it from startup.Reboot and your there.Hope this
helps...Steve

agree with steve on the printer driver... but as i understood your post you also installed an application that caused further problems. if this was an older application right click on the executable file of it and bring up it's properties. select compatibility tab and turn on the check box and select windows 95, 98, me, ne or 2000

good luck - jim o

actually i am using the win2k driver but it isnt a 'good' fit. the printer
works fine, but xp still thinks it isnt installed.

i know printers are cheap but this is a small xerox laser that i dont think
ive ever put a new toner in. i really dont print at home a lot :)

i can live with the aggravation having to kill the new equipment dialogue
but the 'install' software one is very insistent and comes back multiple
times. i was just hoping there was a way to block it.
